A 20-year-old law student in Visakhapatnam was raped, allegedly by her boyfriend and three of his friends. The offense was registered and the suspect blackmailed her for months. Broken by the intimidation, the young woman tried to commit suicide, but her father managed to save her. She then told her family about the horror she was going through, and they supported her by filing a police complaint.

The Visakhapatnam city police yesterday said the four suspects have been arrested under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections relating to gang rape, voyeurism and criminal intimidation along with sections of the Information Technology Act.

Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner Shanka Brata Bagchi said, “All four suspects have been arrested and remanded in police custody. The victim’s boyfriend and his three close friends are the suspects.”

Police say the woman and her boyfriend had been in a relationship for more than a year and had also promised to marry her. On August 13, he took her to his friend’s room and there she was sexually assaulted. His other friends filmed the act. They threatened her with distributing the images and sexually assaulted her, police said.

This intimidation lasted for months. Driven to the edge, the woman tried to commit suicide on Monday, but her father managed to save her in time. Then she told me what she was going through. Supported by her family, the woman then filed a complaint with the police.

The opposition YSR Congress Party has hit out at the N Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP government over the incident.
