Six dead and at least ten injured in Pumwani fire tragedy

Fire tragedy in Pumwani village in Nairobi

At least six people were killed in a fire incident in the sprawling Kitui Village, Pumwani, Nairobi on Tuesday, November 19.

Police said at least 10 others, mostly men, were injured and are in hospitals following the incident.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, police said.

More than fifty houses were razed to the ground during the incident. According to the emergency services, this has created many homeless people.

Nairobi Police Chief Adamson Bungei said they were investigating the tragedy.

“There are many people who die in such an incident. They are all men and we are investigating the tragedy,” he said.

At least 16 people were treated for minor injuries as efforts to find missing persons continued into the night, according to the Kenya Red Cross.

The source of the fire, which was brought under control hours later, has yet to be determined, police said.

“Together with the Nairobi City County Fire Service and community members, we managed to contain a fire incident in Kitui Village, Majengo, Nairobi. The Kenya Red Cross remains on the ground and is supporting efforts to locate missing persons,” the organization said. a tweet.

Kamkunji MP Yusuf Hassan mourned the deaths.

“This tragedy marks one of the deadliest fires in Kamukunji. Emergency teams are on the scene and are searching the affected area for more victims. Many of the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.”

“My sincere condolences go out to the residents of Kitui Village who lost relatives and friends in this intense fire, which quickly engulfed part of the neighborhood,” he said.

Nairobi County government officials said they will send teams to the scene to assess the scene for necessary action.

Officials said they plan to help those affected reconstruct their structures.

People in hospitals will also receive help.

This is the latest in a series of fire incidents that have occurred in the area.

Police say most of the city’s slums report at least one fire incident every day.

This has expanded the services of firefighters and others.

The lack of roads to the areas to improve response is cited as part of the challenges facing responders.

Those affected are camping outside local schools and calling for help in rebuilding their buildings.

A similar incident in the Mathare region left many people homeless on Monday evening.
