Juan Mata becomes co-owner of MLS side San Diego FC

Former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata has announced he has joined the ownership group of MLS club San Diego FC.

The 36-year-old hasn’t retired from football yet as he plays in the Australian A League for Western Sydney Wanderers.

Mata follows in David Beckham’s footsteps as a former Premier League player and owns a percentage of an MLS club, but becomes the first active player to join club ownership.

The midfielder has never played in MLS, but spent time in Japan’s J1 league before making the move to Australia.
