Congress stings Prime Minister Narendra Modi after Gautam Adani is accused of bribery in the US: intimate connection

Hours after the The US has charged Gautam Adani with bribery and fraudReiterating its call for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Adani group’s dealings, the Congress took a jab at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pointing to a so-called “internal nexus” between him and “his favorite businessman”.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the chargesheet against Gautam Adani and others by the US Securities and Exchange Commission reaffirms his party’s call for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe.

The Congress has been pushing for the probe since January 2023, raising concerns over alleged irregularities involving Adani and his business dealings, Ramesh said.

Ramesh was referring to the party’s series “Hum Adani ke Hain”, which asked 100 questions about the alleged scam and ties between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gautam Adani.

Noting that the questions remain unanswered, he reiterated the need for accountability on the matter.

US authorities have accused Adani of misleading investors by concealing information about his company’s solar energy project in India, which allegedly involved bribery.

Adani has been charged with securities fraud and conspiracy, according to an indictment unsealed Wednesday. The case centers on an agreement between Adani Green Energy Ltd. and another organization to provide 12 gigawatts of solar energy to the Indian government.

Ramesh batted SEBI’s research approachsaying: “The SEC’s actions also cast a poor light on the manner in which its Indian counterpart, namely SEBI, investigated violations of securities and other laws by the Adani Group and its baffling inability to hold the Group accountable for the source of its investments, shell companies, etc.”

The legal documents stated that while promoting the project to Wall Street investors who invested millions over five years, the defendants also engaged in a $265 million bribery scheme in India to win contracts expected to close over the course of would generate $2 billion in profits for twenty years.
