Injured Real Madrid player gives Carlo Ancelotti a boost ahead of the match against Liverpool

It’s been a torrid time for Real Madrid regarding injuries. Several first-team players were missing at some stage of the season. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti will have to shuffle the pack against Leganes on Sunday, but one player could return against Liverpool in midweek.

French midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni Ancelotti appears to have been given a boost ahead of the crucial Champions League match against Premier League-topped Liverpool. The question is: if he is available, what position will he play?

It’s a big boost for Real Madrid, who could now play Aurelien Tchouameni at centre-back alongside Antonio Rudiger.

Real Madrid are likely to play 21-year-old youth defender Raul Asencio against Leganes on Sunday. However, that will be his first start and second appearance for the first team. Playing Asencio against Liverpool could be a baptism of fire for the young player.

Ancelotti relies on Tchouameni as a centre-back and played with him there a few times last season and in the 2024/25 season. The Frenchman has a strong presence and will not be put off by the atmosphere at Anfield on a Champions League night.

Los Blancos have won two from four games in the new Champions League. Defeat to Liverpool could dent their hopes of a first-round exit in the knockout stages, meaning two extra games into the season.

Luke Vazquez could also join Tchouameni when he returns to the team for the match against Liverpool. Vazquez was injured against Osasuna before the internal national break and was able to return sooner than expected.
