Jussie Smollett: How US court overturns actor’s fake assault conviction

The Illinois Supreme Court for the United States on Thursday overturned the conviction of actor Jussie Smollett on charges that he staged a racist and homophobic attack against himself in front of downtown Chicago in 2019 and lied to police.

According to the state Supreme Court’s ruling, the special prosecutor may not intervene after the Cook County prosecutor dropped charges against Smollett in exchange for forgetting my $10,000 bond and performing community service.

The verdict and appeal against Smollett continued to claim his innocence.

Smollett, we’re black and gay, claims two men attacked me, shouted racist and homophobic epithets at me and put a rope around my neck, leading to a massive search for suspects by Chicago police detectives who broke news of the make the whole world.

Smollett’s attorneys continue to work on the appeal for more than two years.

They claim they don’t expect the charges to be refiled in 2020 after the Cook County State Attorney Office already dropped the charges in exchange for community service the year before.

Judges for Illinois agree that it is unfair for the court to not give credit to the agreement.

“We are aware that this case has not aroused public interest and that many people are dissatisfied with the resolution of the original case and believe it to be unfair,” the judges said.

Smollett always says I’m innocent and the victim of a crime – sometimes there’s no address in the court document.
