Great Han International Company Pte Limited’s property development along Princess Road in Tamavua has been given permission to proceed with work.

However, the Environment Tribunal, Nasinu Civil Jurisdiction has only given the green light to buildings one and two on level one.

In September this year, the Environment Director filed an ex-parte application for a work stoppage, requiring company director Qun Ma to stop all work. This request was granted.

Qun Ma filed an affidavit to set aside the ex-parte order and allow him to complete the construction of buildings one and two on level one.

In his affidavit, Ma highlighted the company’s significant investment of more than $15 million in Fiji since 2019.

This investment includes the Princess Road project, a hotel in Suva Bay, Sigatoka and other commercial properties being subdivided for residential and commercial development.

Ma’s lawyer, Feizal Haniff, argued that the proposal to lift the work ban was limited to only buildings one and two.

Haniff also highlighted the financial difficulties his client is facing as a result of the cessation of operations.

He said lenders were issuing notices due to construction delays.

Magistrate Charles Ratakele of the Environment Tribunal said the Director of Environment has raised concerns about the potential for environmental damage from the project site and that the stop work order provides an opportunity to address these environmental issues and ensure that the project is developed in a sustainable manner.

Magistrate Ratakele said the tribunal would only focus on whether the company can continue to work on construction of levels one and two to complete level three.

The tribunal subsequently ruled in favor of Big Hans and allowed them to complete construction of Buildings One and Two.
