Look | Russian plane engine catches fire after landing in Turkey; all 95 on board safely evacuated

The engine of a Russian-made passenger plane caught fire on Sunday after landing at Antalya airport in southern Turkey, the Turkish Transport Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said landings at the airport were suspended until 3 a.m. local time (0000 GMT) while authorities towed the plane from the runway.

All 89 passengers and six crew members were safely evacuated from Azimuth Airlines’ Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger plane from the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi, the ministry said.

A video shared on social media by Airport Haber news website showed emergency units responding to the scene of the fire, with flames and smoke coming from the plane’s engine.

Videos shared by the Ministry of Transport following the incident show the plane with firefighting foam underneath as firefighters continue to spray the left engine to cool it.

Azimuth Airlines said the plane made a rough landing due to wind shear. Russia’s Federal Aviation Authority, Rosaviatsiya, said it was investigating the incident.

Flight tracking website FlightRadar24 said the plane was seven years old. Russia is facing a shortage of aircraft due to Western sanctions imposed over Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
