Yellowstone: What does revoke mean, and how does it affect Jamie?

In Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 11, “Three Fifty-Three,” Jamie Dutton is rejected, meaning everything he has worked for is suddenly on the line. (Warning: major spoilers forward!)

So far, Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 has been a mix of cowboys and government antics Jamie Dutton right in the middle of it all. After it turned out that his lover Sarah Atwood was responsible for The murder of John DuttonJamie is struggling, trying to survive.

But in episode 11, things are turned upside down when Jamie tries to chat up the new governor who takes John Dutton’s place. The adopted Dutton is “recused”, but what exactly does this mean?

Here’s a look at what it all means and how it affects Jamie Dutton going forward.

What does “reclusive” mean in Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 11?

When someone is ‘withdrawn’ from a lawsuit, it means they are removed due to a personal conflict of interest – meaning Jamie cannot be involved in any legal matters involving John Dutton or the farm.

In YellowstoneJamie is the district attorney for Montana. We’ve seen him act in a legal capacity on behalf of the ranch before and become involved in their affairs, but in Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 11, things are shaken up.

Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 11: Jamie and Lynelle sit at a desk

The new acting governor makes a motion for Jamie to “recuse himself from the issue of conviction and any investigation into the death of John Dutton.”

This comes after it was revealed that John Dutton’s cause of death was actually “undetermined”, meaning an investigation was ongoing, rather than a suicide.

Earlier in the episode, Jamie also convinced the Governor to take over eminent domain Dutton Ranch (meaning the government has control over the property). So there is a murder investigation surrounding John’s death, plus legal proceedings regarding the ranch.

If Jamie is rejected, it means he cannot be involved in either case because there would be a conflict of interest because he is part of the Dutton family and has personal ties with those involved.

What it means for Jamie Dutton

If Jamie is rejected, it means he will be an observer in John Dutton’s death investigation, and it also means he won’t be able to make legal decisions about the future of the ranch – two things he was deeply concerned about.

John Dutton’s death wouldn’t be a problem for Jamie at all… as his girlfriend wasn’t behind it. Sarah Atwood, who worked for Market Equities, hired the hit on John. Jamie soon found out, and it’s been eating him up inside ever since.

It was previously written off as a suicide, but now that there is a full investigation, Jamie is in the direct line of fire. Sarah later points out to him that he actually had no role in orchestrating the hit, but we all know he could still be connected to her.

Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2: Wes Bentley as Jamie Dutton standing behind a podium

As for the future of the ranch, Jamie was long ago cut out of the will. So he has no direct financial benefit from the sale of the ranch. However, his goal was to complete the airport plans for Market Equities, which would once again make Montana millions in profits.

If he’s not allowed to be part of the deal between the ranch, the government, and Market Equities, it essentially means he’s been pushed out of his own plan.

However, there is An silver lining. In the latest episode of Yellowstone, Sarah points out that no one can actually deny Jamie except himself and a judge. So the idea has been proposed, but it will take an actual ruling from a judge or Jamie to make it happen.
