Apple should let a Fire TV Stick compete and not its own TV, says expert

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has suggested that Apple should consider launching an Amazon Fire TV Stick equivalent instead of a TV.

His piece follows new rumors that Apple is once again considering a TV set, as well as an iPad-like smart home hub.

There’s been some talk lately Apple is once again exploring the idea of launching its own TV set.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently reported the company was considering an Apple-branded TV, in addition to the suggestions it is also considering iPad-like smart home device that can rival the likes of Amazon’s Echo Show And Google’s NestHub.

This isn’t the first time Apple has considered entering the TV market against the competition best TVs by Samsung, SonyPanasonic and LG, but whether it will actually happen this time remains the question.

What if it didn’t make an Apple TV at all and made a TV instead? Amazon Fire TV Stick rival that you could plug into an HDMI port on the back of your current TV and access Apple’s tvOS interface and services? That’s what Gurman believes the company should do, and we don’t disagree. It’s something we’ve wanted for years.

In his opinion piece on Bloomberghe says the flow AppleTV box” lags behind competing products and the company’s best video-watching device: the Vision Pro – it will take years before it becomes a consumer hit.”

He adds: “If Apple provided a cheap and fast way to access tvOS, the App Store and services on any TV, it could quickly gain a foothold and increase service revenue.” He wouldn’t be wrong.

In Gurman’s idea for the Apple Fire TV Stick equivalent, he doesn’t suggest a physical remote control, with a iPhone instead used as a remote control and he said for those looking for more storage or power, the power Apple TV 4K could still be an option.

He’s also toying with the idea of an even more powerful device at the top of the Apple TV range, like the latest Mac mini resulting in “the same ‘good, better, best’ strategy used by the iPhone, Mac, iPadAirPods, Apple Watch and even the Apple Pencil”.

The writer even goes so far as to call the Apple TV lineup he thinks Apple should offer Apple TV SE, Apple TV, and Apple TV Max.

Of course, whether Apple will ever make a cheaper stick remains to be seen. It’s quite an argument though, and as we said, this is something we’ve been hoping will appear for years.

For now, we’ll keep adding it to our list for Santa.
