Ludhiana: In a tragic incident that underlines the risks of unregulated liquor sales at late hours, a 19-year-old boy who pleaded for a promised bottle of beer was killed by five acquaintances with sluggers and sticks near the local railway station on Saturday evening. Victim Kamaljeet Singh came from Mohalla Adarsh ​​Nagar.
The teenager was with three friends when they came across one of the suspects, Happy Rajput, near the station around 1am. The victim allegedly asked Happy to buy him a beer bottle. Initially agreeable, Happy later declined and joined two other friends, Sandeep and Sunil, who were in a nearby parked car.
When Kamaljeet confronted Happy about not keeping his promise, a heated argument ensued. Happy, along with his friends Sandeep and Sunil and two others, Shiva and Ankit, attacked Kamaljeet with sluggers and sticks they had in their car, based on what police claim to have discovered.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Anil Kumar Bhanot explained to the media how Kamaljeet’s friends initially tried to intervene but fled the scene as the violence escalated. After Kamaljeet fell unconscious and the attackers fled, his friends took him to Ludhiana Civil Hospital. He was later referred to Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Arrests, investigation
Police have arrested three suspects – Happy Rajput (19), Shiva (18) and Ankit (22) – while two others, Sandeep and Sunil, are still on the run. An FIR has been registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including rioting and murder committed with common intention. Authorities are conducting further raids to arrest the remaining suspects.
