COPA investigates an off-duty officer’s shootout with two assailants in Washington Park

An off-duty Chicago police officer exchanged gunfire with two assailants in Washington Park on the South Side early Sunday.

The officer was confronted by two gunmen in the 100 block of East 57th Street around 1:50 a.m. and all three fired, although the officer was not injured and the gunmen fled, Chicago police said.

Police will not say who fired first. The officer initially exchanged gunfire with one person, before a second gunman also opened fire on the officer. Both gunmen then fled.

No injuries were reported, police said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating, as it always does when an officer fires a weapon.
