As far as history is concerned, the fort was built in 1550 CE when the ruler of Kutch, Khengarji Jadeja I, founded the city of Roha in Nakhatrana province, about 50 km from Bhuj, and gave it to his brother Sahebji. With an area of ​​16 hectares, there were approximately 52 villages under this fort at the time.

The place was named Sumari Roha after a tragic story of courage and sacrifice. In the 13th century, when Allauddin Khilji invaded the region, 120 Rajput princesses from the Soomra dynasty took refuge in the Roha Fort. Rather than surrender to the invaders, they chose to use Samadhi, a self-immolation ritual, to preserve their honor.

Later it was his successor and grandson Thakore Noganji who built the fort in the 18th century with baked bricks and stones. The fort complex is full of a temple, residential palaces for the king and his queens, and even a separate prison built for those who break the law in the jagir. The imposing walls, intricate carvings and strategic location make it a captivating sight.

Over the years, the fort has witnessed the rise and fall of dynasties and played a crucial role in the history of the region. The British took control of the fort in the early 18th century and made several changes, including two deep wells in the fort. Later, most parts of the fort were destroyed due to earthquakes and lack of proper management.

Another remarkable thing about this place is that the famous poet of Gujarat, Kalapi, spent a lot of time at Roha Hill, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and wrote some of the most romantic poems.
