Officer involved in fatal shooting of suspect in Rochester identified

ROCHESTER, Ind. (WNDU) – One of two law enforcement officers police say were involved in the Fatal shooting of a suspect last weekend has been identified in Rochester.

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office says Senior Deputy Ryan Haney fired his weapon while responding to a domestic disturbance in the 800 block of Monroe Street on Saturday morning.

According to police, 37-year-old Steven Harding of Rochester pointed a gun in the direction of Senior Deputy Haney and another officer as they responded to the call. That’s when they reportedly fired their weapons at least once, hitting Harding. He died on the spot from his injuries.

Indiana State Police are conducting the investigation. It will be reviewed by the Fulton County Prosecutor’s Office once it is completed.

Senior Deputy Haney and the other officer have been placed on administrative leave until further notice.

The other officer involved has not been identified at this time.
