Spartanburg hospital employee dies after being hit by SUV, ‘tragic loss of teammate’

A Spartanburg hospital worker died Tuesday morning after an SUV struck her while she was in a crosswalk.

Mayita Cocio, 58, died at 9:52 a.m. after she was struck by a vehicle while walking outside Spartanburg Medical Center, according to Major Art Littlejohn of the Spartanburg Police Department.

Cocio was walking in a crosswalk on East Wood Street near North Church Street when Angel Francisco Rodriguez Perez hit her with his black Chevrolet Tahoe SUV, Littlejohn said.

According to Littlejohn, Cocio was walking from the Doctors Center to the main hospital when the SUV struck her at 8:42 a.m. Perez was driving the SUV with a suspended license and failed to yield to Cocio.

Perez was not injured and he will be charged with driving under suspension and failure to yield to a pedestrian, Littlejohn said.

Cocio was an employee at Spartanburg Medical Center.

“The employees of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System are deeply saddened by today’s tragic loss of a teammate outside Spartanburg Medical Center,” Spartanburg Regional Health System said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of our colleague. We stand ready to provide the family with all possible support at this incredibly difficult time.”
