Man charged with murder and rape of elderly woman | News

Jayvon Forbes, 25, was charged yesterday with the murder and rape of Vernencha Butler, 72.

Police said Butler was sexually assaulted and strangled at her home in Ross Corner on Saturday.

Forbes, who appeared in court, was also charged with burglary.

He was not required to enter a plea to the charge and Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans noted the court had no jurisdiction to grant bail.

The case was postponed until February 27, 2025.

Forbes was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.

His attorney, Mark Rolle, noted that Forbes received death threats while in custody.

“He says he was told what will happen when he gets to prison,” Rolle told the court, noting that Forbes had visible bruises.

The magistrate said she will note on Forbes’ remand form that he will be placed in isolation in prison.

“When did he get these threats?” she asked.

Rolle said his client received the threats while at the Grove police station and that some inmates there threatened him.

This led to Forbes being placed in isolation at the station, Rolle added.
