Georgian Prime Minister announces suspension of EU membership talks until the end of 2028 – Meduza

Georgia will suspend its membership of the EU until the end of 2028, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Thursday: according to to Georgian media.

“We have decided not to put the issue of opening negotiations with the European Union on the agenda until the end of 2028,” he said at a press conference.

According to Kobakhidze, Georgia will also refuse all EU budget subsidies. He said that the end of 2028 is the point at which Georgia will be sufficiently prepared to start EU accession negotiations in 2030.

The Prime Minister continues declared that relations between Georgia and the EU are and must remain bilateral:

We are a proud and self-respecting nation with a long history, so it is categorically unacceptable for us to see integration into the EU as a favor that the EU should grant us.
