As we reported yesterday, Ukraine is pushing for immediate membership of NATO – a request it must present to the alliance in Brussels today.
Although the Latvian foreign minister said her country was in favor of the move, she suggested there was “a reality” shaping the positions of many of her colleagues.
Donald Trump, the newly elected US president, has said he will end Russia’s war with Ukraine in just 24 hours, although his team’s plans for the conflict remain unclear.
“In principle, we as political leaders have agreed that Ukraine will become a member,” Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Bra told Reuters on the sidelines of the NATO meeting.
“The issue is under what circumstances and when, and that is obviously where the alliance needs to come together. All allies, right now, everyone is waiting for the new US administration to start working, so I think this is an aspect that is said or not said. but it is a reality.”
Bra, a former senior NATO official, said Kiev’s battle-hardened military would be an asset to NATO.
“A number of countries don’t necessarily feel comfortable inviting a country at war to join NATO,” she said.
“We are more flexible.”
