Results from the 99th Annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays Track Meet

The 99^th annual Howard Wood Dakota Relay held in Sioux Falls this weekend (May 3-4, 2024).

Coach Howard Wood organized the first track meet on May 4, 1923. Since then, the track meet has grown into a major two-day event bringing together more than 3,000 middle and high school athletes from across the upper Midwest.

Each year, the Howard Wood Dakota Relays host a “special,” invitation-only race for girls and one for boys. This year the women’s event was the 800 meter race. Among the eight girls competing was Ella Boekelheide, a sophomore from the Northwest region. She ranked 8^th with a time of 2:15:07. Berkeley Engelland of Mount Vernon/Plankinton won the event with a time of 2:10:84.

The boys’ “special” event was the 200 meters. It was won by Jeran McNichols of Bismarck, North Dakota, with a time of 21.24 seconds.

Several teams and individual athletes from central South Dakota competed. Some of the girls’ results were:

• Girls Class B 4 × 800 meter relay: 4th place-Potter County (D Kaup, R Persoon, J Ahlemeier, E Schlachter

• Girls shot put: 6th place-Reese Terwilliger, Pierre

• Girls 3200M: 5th place-Kinsey Evans, Chamberlain

• Girls 1600 Split Medley Relay: Class B 3rd place – Potter County (K Cronin, F Heien, D Kaup, E Schlachter) Class A 7th place – Mobridge/Pollock (J Netterville, J Thompson, R Thompson, H Olson)

• Girls 400m: 4th place-Charlee Williams-Smith, Pierre

• Girls 100M: 5th place-Kali Ringstmeyer, Pierre

• Class B girls 4×400 meter relay: 2nd place – Potter County (D Kaup, J Ahlemeier, F Heien, E Schlachter)

Some of the boys’ results were:

• Boys Shot Put: 6th place – Ethan Watson, White River

• 4 × 800 meters relay for boys in class B; 3rd place-Philip (W Burns, A Peterson, T Boe, B Burns)

• Boys Javelin Throw: 7th place-Colter Babcock, Pierre

• Boys Class B 4 × 200 meter relay: 7th place-Philip (R Peterson, L Terkildsen, Jones and L Kuchenbecker) 8th place-Potter County (S Seuer, L Larson, J Simon, C Luikens)

• Boys 3200M: 7th place-Jared Lutmer, Pierre

• Boys 1600 Split Medley Relay: 5th place Class B – Philip (R Peterson, L Terkildsen, L Kuchenbecker, T Larson)

• Boys 400M: 8th place-Carson Stoeser, Pierre

• Special Olympics boys 100m: 1st-Kaden Cumbow, Pierre

• Boys Class B 4 × 400 meter relay: 5th place-Philip (R Peterson, L Terkilsen, T Larson, L Kuchenbecker) 6th place-Jones County (A Schoon, J Nix, A Best, K Kinsley)
