John Oliver relieved but sad, Clarence Thomas did not accept resignation offer

Last February, “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver made Clarence Thomas an offer: Resign from the Supreme Court and he’d get a new RV, plus $1 million a year from Oliver. -even until the death of one of them. Thomas had 30 days to accept, but he didn’t, and for Oliver it was both a “huge relief” but also “hugely disappointing.”

The offer came at the end of Oliver’s Season 11 premiere, with the late-night host noting that he and his team had talked to experts about it, and they all agreed that “it’s in sort of legal,” and adding that HBO itself would not take up the offer. money on the transaction.

Appearing on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” Monday night, Oliver laughed about making the offer, especially considering his wife’s reaction (she wasn’t thrilled). So when Thomas didn’t accept it, Oliver had mixed feelings.

“It was both a huge relief and a huge disappointment that he didn’t take it,” he admitted to Meyers.

That said, the HBO host also admitted that he would be willing to make the offer again, even if the initial 30-day window has passed.

“As long as it comes out before they make the June decisions, I would be willing to reopen discussions,” Oliver said.

Then, turning to speak directly to Thomas through the camera, he extended the offer again, formally.

“If you would like to contact us and resume negotiations, I still have the contract in my desk drawer,” Oliver said. “And I would be willing to do that.” But again, until one of us dies, and I hope it’s you.
