Navy Secretary Names Submarine Miami, Announces Ship's Local Sponsor - WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

MIAMI (WSVN) – Miami rolled out the red carpet for the visiting military Tuesday evening.

Organizers held the gala welcome ceremony at Jungle Plaza in the Miami Design District.

During the Fleet Week concert celebration, Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro announced that a nuclear-powered submarine would be named after the 305 and would benefit from local sponsors.

“The nuclear-powered submarine SSN 811, the USS Miami,” Del Toro said.

Del Toro also announced that the ship’s sponsor would be Gloria Estefan.

“It is also my great honor to announce that the sponsor of the future USS Miami will be Ms. Gloria Estefan,” Del Toro said.

Estefan was delighted to be named sponsor.

“Oh my God. It’s such an honor because it’s a submarine,” Estefan said.

After the ceremony, nationally known Miami entertainers entertained the troops to show their appreciation for their service.
