Google Messages rolls out a redesigned audio recorder and Voice Moods

What is the story

Google Messages is expanding the reach of its recently revamped audio recording interface and Voice Moods feature, specifically targeting beta users.

This development comes after the tech giant added voice memo support to the Wear OS Messages app in October last year.

The updated recording interface is now accessible by simply tapping the voice memo button, conveniently located in the bottom right section of a conversation.

Improved user experience

The previous method of long-pressing to enter the recording interface remains an option, but now a new indicator informs users whether to swipe up or unlock the updated interface.

The redesigned interface provides a user-friendly experience, allowing users to tap the microphone icon below to start recording.

Once recording begins, users see a waveform and options to immediately restart, stop, and join (only in SMS conversations).

Noise cancellation and improved audio quality

Google has also added a new noise cancellation feature to its updated interface, complete with on/off control.

The tech giant said it has improved the overall sound quality of voice messages by increasing the bit rate as well as the sampling rate.

This improvement aims to provide users with clearer and more audible voice messages.

Voice Moods for Animated Emojis

The latest update introduces a fun feature called Voice Moods, allowing users to choose from nine animated emoji backgrounds for their audio message card.

This feature underwent a Material 3 change in March. If expressive animations are turned off, these emojis remain static.

Emojis available include a smiling face with hearts, a loud crying face, a slightly smiling face, an angry face, a face rolling on the floor laughing, a partying face, a face with open mouth, a face with rolling eyes and a crying face.
