(Frankfurt, Ky.) – Kentuckians are reminded to be “REAL ID READY” as the one-year mark for federal enforcement arrives.

On May 7, 2025, a state-issued REAL ID driver’s credential or other federally accepted form of REAL ID, such as a passport, will be required for air travel checkpoints or for travel. Access to military bases or federal buildings requiring identification.

State-issued REAL ID driving credentials must be applied for in person at any regional driver licensing office operated by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC).

Kentucky offers two versions of all driver and ID cards: a standard ID card or a REAL ID. A Kentucky REAL ID displays a cut-out black star. A standard version displays the Kentucky Unbridled Spirit logo or the words “NOT FOR ACTUAL IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES.” To find more information about the differences, click here.

“We want Kentuckians to be able to board a domestic flight or visit a loved one stationed on a military base without any hiccups in their plans, and taking the time now to make sure you have some form of REAL room ID card to make sure you can get to where you need to go,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “With many acceptable forms of REAL ID available, such as a REAL ID driver’s license, military ID card or passport, Kentuckians have several options for traveling.”

A four-year REAL ID-compliant driver’s license costs $24, and $48 for an eight-year title. A standard non-compliant four-year license costs $21.50, while an eight-year license costs $43.

Kentuckians can renew their driver’s license up to six months before the printed expiration date. Cardholders who are not in their renewal window but want a REAL ID can upgrade their standard card for $15. The new card will keep the same expiration date.

A standard license can still be used after the effective date to drive and as proof of identity, age and residence for voting purposes and age-restricted purchases, such as alcohol.
