Zendaya BOUGHT her MET Gala Dress; Stylist Law Roach calls borrowing clothes 'unfair'

Zendaya, co-chair of the 2024 Met Gala’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” theme, wowed with two distinct looks, including an iconic black dress that she decided to buy rather than borrow, setting her apart as a fashion icon.

Zendaya is officially the queen of the MET and that’s IT! In a world where celebrities order custom pieces from designers or simply borrow, Zendaya makes her own rules. As you would expect, the girly girl didn’t borrow her dramatic black dress, but rather “bought” the whole thing.

Zendaya, co-president of 2024 Met Gala themed Sleeping Beauties: Awakening Fashion, made a lasting impression with her choice of attire for the event. Not one, but the actress sported two statement looks on the MET red carpet, each capturing a different aspect of this year’s theme.

Her first dress was a Maison Margiela piece that looked straight out of a vampy fairy tale. The mix of green and blue hues, followed by the spiral skirt and intricate grape vine embellishments added a touch of enchantment to Zendaya’s look. Completing this ethereal ensemble was her avant-garde makeup, reminiscent of the doll-shaped creations from the Margiela Artisanal 2024 show.

However, for her second look, she took a completely different route, choosing an archival piece of Galliano’s work. Givenchy collection in 1996. The black dress, with a loose silhouette, lace-up corset, balloon sleeves and delicate frayed lace trim, exuded elegance and sophistication.

And, according to Zendaya’s stylist Law Cockroach, the black dress is now part of Zendaya’s personal collection. “We tried it. We fell in love with it. And she bought it,” Roach said, revealing that they found the dress at LILY et Cie, a Beverly Hills-based retail store stocked with 20th and 21st century clothing.

In an interview with Extra, Law Roach told the story of acquiring the second dress. Rather than return the archival piece, Zendaya made the bold decision to add it to her personal wardrobe. Something you don’t hear much about in the fashion world!

“Because we really believe we support small businesses. And I think it’s unfair to borrow from people who use these clothes as a livelihood,” Roach said.
