CMS announces several school closures Thursday due to power outages

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Following severe storms Wednesday afternoon and evening, and more rain early Thursday morning, several Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are closed Thursday due to power outages.

District officials said students would not have remote learning days and there would be no ASEP, extracurricular activities or sports on Thursday.

The district said any national or state tests students were scheduled to take will be postponed and teachers will have a remote work day.

A complete list of CMS schools included in Thursday’s closures is below:

  • Albemarle Road Elementary School
  • Cochrane College
  • Garinger High School
  • Harding University
  • Hidden Valley Elementary School
  • High independence
  • Lincoln Heights Montessori
  • Merry Oaks International Academy
  • Montclaire Elementary School
  • Oaklawn Language Academy
  • Paw Creek Elementary School
  • Phillip O. Berry Academy
  • Upper Rocky River
  • Sharon Elementary School
  • Steele Creek Elementary School
  • Villa Heights Elementary School
  • Westerly Hills Elementary School
  • Wilson Midfield

All public schools in Gaston and Cleveland counties are also closed Thursday, along with two schools in Lincoln County. A full list of closures across the region can be found here.
