Just Stop Oil priest and another activist destroy Magna Carta display

Reverend Sue Parfitt and another campaigner smashed the glass case around the Magna Carta at the British Library.

The 82-year-old, along with Judy Bruce, an 85-year-old retired teacher, then held up a sign reading “Government is breaking the law” before pressing themselves to the screen.

In response, the British Library said its security team intervened to prevent further damage to the case, which was minimal, ensuring that the Magna Carta itself remained intact. The ancient legal document, which ensured that the king and his government were not above the law, is one of four remaining copies, according to the library.

Reverend Parfitt said: “The Magna Carta is rightly revered because it is of great importance to our history, to our freedoms and to our laws. But there will be no freedom, no legality, no rights if we allow climate change to turn into a catastrophe. which is now threatened. »

“We must put things in proportion. The abundance of life on earth, the climatic stability that allows civilization to continue are what must be revered and protected above all else, even above our most precious objects .”

Bruce said: “This week, 400 respected scientists contributing to the IPCC reports say we are ‘woefully unprepared’ for what’s coming: 2.5 degrees or more of warming above pre-industrial levels.

“Instead of taking action, our dysfunctional government is like the three monkeys: ‘see no evil, hear no evil, say no evil’ – act like we’re 25 years old…we’re not.

“We need to get rid of our dependence on oil and gas by 2030, starting now.”

The Metropolitan Police said two people had been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and were currently in custody.
