  • Perch Energy has created an energy cost calculator for air conditioners
  • The calculator can estimate costs based on the size and hours of use of the air conditioner.
  • New Yorkers also tend to spend around $2,760 per year on electricity.

Americans have been shocked after a new energy cost calculator for air conditioners revealed how much money they spend to keep their homes cool.

Perch Energy, a Boston-based software company, has developed an online calculator that can estimate the hourly cost of operating an air conditioning unit.

The calculator only requires the user to enter the size of the unit – small, medium or large, whether it is a central or standalone unit and the number of hours of use.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average cost of electricity in the United States is 16 cents per kWh.

According to the calculator, an average-sized 4,000-watt central air conditioning unit used five hours a day can cost about $96 a month. If left on overnight, for eight hours, the price comes to $115.20 per month.

According to the calculator, an average-sized central air conditioning unit rated at 4,000 watts used five hours a day can cost around $96 per month.
On the other hand, a two-ton AC unit with 6,000 watts of power, also used for just five hours a day, can cost around $144 per month.

However, if an air conditioner has a higher wattage, it is even more exorbitant.

But while these costs may seem exorbitant, the average 650-watt window AC unit used during the same time period only costs $15.60 on average per month.

Prices also vary depending on what state you are in and the cost of energy.

The average residential electricity rate in New York is 22 cents per kWh, which is 21% higher than the national average rate of 18 cents per kWh.

According to the website, New Yorkers could end up paying $85,200 in electricity bills over the next 25 years at this rate.

To ensure the air conditioning unit isn’t burning energy unnecessarily, Energy Star recommends checking the temperature of the thermostat; tighten all electrical connections; measure voltage and current on motors as well as clean and change the air filter of central air conditioners, furnaces and/or heat pumps.

The US newspaper Sun was the first to report monthly air conditioning price calculations.
