Newsflash • First Selectman announces receipt of ,000 in funding

Trumbull First Selectwoman Vicki A. Tesoro announced that the Town of Trumbull will receive $80,000 for community gardens. The funds will be used to expand the Trumbull Community Gardens in Abraham Nichols Park and to create a new community garden at the Trumbull Senior Center on Pricilla Place. Rep. Sarah Keitt (D-Trumbull, Fairfield) worked to secure the funding through federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Both areas will have raised beds, be fenced and be friendly to seniors and people with disabilities. The grant will fund the creation of both areas with all materials and labor needed to install the gardens. The Abraham Nichols Park area will include 40 to 50 new raised beds in an area separate from the existing garden. The Trumbull Senior Center area will include 10 to 20 raised beds.

Tesoro said, “This funding will significantly expand and improve our community gardens in Trumbull. Fully accessible raised beds and gardens will allow everyone in the community to use a garden. Not only is it a wonderful hobby, but the food is also healthy and can save our residents money on their food bills. I want to thank State Representative Sarah Keitt, who spearheaded this funding for our city. She has been extraordinary in her advocacy for Trumbull projects and residents.

The project is a partnership between the Trumbull Parks Department and the Senior Center. The Senior Center will offer gardening, nutrition and cooking programs to complement the community gardens.

“Community gardens are beneficial to people because they can grow their own food and plants,” noted Rep. Keitt. “These gardens increase families’ access to healthy, affordable food, reduce food insecurity, and promote social connections with others using the community garden, among other things.” I am very happy that Trumbull is adding more community gardens to the city.
