Pep Guardiola was stunned by Josko Gvardiol, who showed his quality for Manchester City and scored a brace against Fulham.

Pep Guardiola was stunned by what Josko Gvardiol did following Manchester City’s 5-1 win over Wolves last weekend.

Gvardiol, a £77.5million signing from RB Leipzig this summer, scored a brace in City’s 4-0 win over Fulham on Saturday.

He failed to find the net in his first 32 appearances for City, but has since scored four in his last seven on the business side.

Three were with his supposedly weaker right foot, the other with a header against Nottingham Forest.

A central defender by trade, Gvardiol played at left back all season and improved as the season progressed.

And he has impressed Guardiola with his dedication, because when the City boss recently rewarded his team with days off, the Croatian was still there to recover.

“The first goal, we signed the best winger on the planet,” Guardiola said, according to Mike Minay of BBC Radio Manchester.

“He’s an incredible guy, he can play different positions.

“After Wolves I gave three days off, he was the only one to go to the training center to recover.

“He lives for his craft. We are signing an incredible signing for many, many years to come.”

The 21-year-old could have made history as the first defender to score a Premier League hat-trick after City were awarded a late penalty.

There was some talk about Gvardiol stepping up, but he was more than happy to allow Julian Alvarez to be the shooter and the Argentine duly scored his 19th goal of the season.

And even though Guardiola praised Gvardiol’s almost inexplicable qualities, he demanded more from him in terms of defensive work.

Guardiola told the BBC’s Match of the Day: “He’s incredible with both feet. Normally the left is hard to find, he’s more comfortable with his right.

“A big goal at the Santiago Bernabeu, today’s goal with the right foot. In the second half he wasn’t at his best, a lot of balls, and as a defender you have to be tight. “For him to add the goals is more than welcome, but he needs to be tighter. But he’s 21 and he’s going to get better.”
