Nancy Drew boss slams The CW after show’s cancellation

Nancy Drew aired the Season 4 finale this week, which ended up serving as the show’s overall finale after The CW network pulled the plug on the famous investigator’s final outing.

Executive producer Larry Teng criticized the network for not telling him about the decision as soon as it was made, explaining that it didn’t leave much room to turn the season 4 finale into a fitting conclusion for years of storytelling.

On X/TwitterTeng wrote, “From what I’ve read, the reactions to the series finale have been mostly positive. Now imagine if you watched this finale without us knowing that it would be the last episode of #NancyDrew. Because That’s what almost happened.”

Teng explained that Nancy Kennedy actress McMann had to film The Good Lawyer and asked what Nancy Drew’s schedule would be so she could do both shows, so CBS producers asked the president of The CW in his name.

“That’s when he told us, ‘Oh, we’re not picking you up. The show is too expensive.'” Teng added. “If our studio hadn’t called, who knows if we would have ever been told. At that point in the season, there were only four episodes left to shoot and the writers were already breaking down the final.

“What a fucking shitty way to tell us we were going to be canceled. Thank goodness the studio called. Because you all deserved the most fitting ending possible. That’s why I applaud the writers for managing to put it all together in place at the end. It was so casual.

The EP added that channels have “every right” to cancel a show if it is unprofitable, but said the decision to withhold the ax news showed “no consideration” for staff or fans.

“Clearly knowing in advance and not telling us until a random call 3/4 of the way through our season is just fucking disrespectful,” he concluded.

Nancy Drew aired on The CW in the United States. There is no broadcaster in the UK.
