Australian tourist shocked after paying for McDonald’s meal

An Australian tourist is warning other travelers after paying a whopping $60 for two McDonald’s meals in Switzerland.

Understanding that she lived in one of the most expensive countries in the world, Jarnah McMillan knew food prices would be high, but “didn’t expect fast food to be so expensive.”

Since most stores are closed on Sundays – traditionally considered a day of rest in predominantly Christian European countries – the young traveler decided to order Uber Eats and was shocked by what she saw.

“I just paid over $60 AUD for two Cheeseburger meals and an extra cheeseburger and it was the cheapest option available. You heard me right,” the Melbourne resident said in a TikTok posted on last month, saying the price was only “a little more.” with Uber Eats delivery fees.

She also claimed she came across a burger meal at Hungry Jacks for 38 francs, the equivalent of $61.91 AUD.

“I can confirm that I will go to the supermarket tomorrow and eat there because it’s very expensive here in Switzerland. It’s beautiful but it’s so expensive.”

Currently, Switzerland is considered the second most expensive country, also topping the Big Mac Index at AUD$10.33 in January this year.

Social media users react to the video

Since its publication, the video has been viewed more than 251,000 times, with many travelers sharing Jarnah’s sentiments and recounting their own experiences.

“My partner and I ordered Uber Eats, 2 boxes of zinger at KFC cost us $90 AU. Nice place but extremely expensive!” one person commented.

“My husband and I spent $130 on two cheeseburgers last night in Zurich,” said another.

“Baby I paid 40 francs in 2021 for 20 McNuggets and a Sprite. The prices are insane,” said a third person.

Some claimed the traveler made up the prices, leading her to make another video on Monday in which she stressed it was a “real experience.”

“The purpose of the video was to discuss the prices of things with someone who might come to Switzerland,” she said. “Especially if you are Australian this may concern you. I really enjoyed my trip to Switzerland, it was worth the price, the supermarkets were much cheaper FYI.”
