Gautam Gambhir reveals his only decision to regret as KKR captain

The former skipper and now mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ Gautam Gambhir revealed his only regret after his two IPL titles (2012) and (2014). Gambhir claimed that throughout his tenure with the team, he was unable to fully realize Suryakumar Yadav’s potential.

When he joined KKR in 2014, Suryakumar Yadav was considered the team’s finisher; however, he left after the 2017 season. Even though Yadav had some shining moments, many believed he should have been moved to the first team. But this was hampered by the team’s crowded batting line-up, and Yadav eventually asked to be dismissed. 2018 saw him return to Mumbai Indians, where he became one of the best hitters in the league. Speaking to Sportskeeda, Gautam Gambhir revealed:

“The role of a leader is to identify the best potential and show it to the world. If there is one regret I have in my seven years as captain, it is that I and as a team never managed to utilize Suryakumar Yadav to the best of his potential,”

“And the reason was because of the suits. You can only play one player at #3. And as a leader, you also have to think about the other 10 players in the XI. He would have been much more effective at #3, but he was just as good at #7.
