New Jersey track meet postponed after athlete hospitalized

The Morris County Track and Field Championships were postponed Wednesday after a Delbarton athlete was transported to a local hospital following a pole vaulting incident.

The athlete, whose name was not released by Delbarton coaches, was injured when he landed awkwardly during the warm-up session before the start of the competition at Boonton High School.

The competition was immediately stopped and competition officials escorted all athletes and coaches to the Boonton gymnasium while medical personnel attended to the athlete.

The athlete was conscious while being treated by trainers and paramedics. According to Delbarton head coach Andrew Sherwood, the athlete was supposed to be airlifted to a local hospital, but due to logistical issues, he was put on a stretcher and taken to the hospital by ambulance. Sherwood also added that he was “fine” but could not provide further details on the situation.

After the competition was delayed about 40 minutes, coaches and athletes were brought back to the track, where they were informed that the competition had been postponed due to the incident, according to competition director Dave Hughen. The meeting will resume Friday at 4:30 p.m.
