Travis Kelce was ‘shocked’ that Ryan Murphy gave him a role in ‘Grostesquerie’

Travis Kelce still can’t believe his luck at landing his latest role!

During a May 14 episode of his New heights podcast, Kansas City Chiefs tight end talked about his experience shooting Ryan Murphy Grotesquerie. Kelce, who stars alongside Niecy Nash-Betts, will make his acting debut on the FX series.

“It’s been so much fun,” he exclaimed. “Ryan Murphy is (an) incredible writer, director, producer, all of the above, man. He’s just – there’s nothing he can’t do and everyone has been so helpful in getting me up to speed. ‘easy.”

Kelce, 34, added: “Even on top of that, I just give myself the direction that I need and the coaching that I need to portray the role that I find myself in.”

The three-time Super Bowl champion admitted his lack of experience made him feel like a “jabroni” among professionals.

“I feel like an amateur. And, uh, I haven’t been fired yet so we’re good,” he continued. “They didn’t tell me to kick rocks after the first week, so it’s been great.”

Even though he’s only been on set for a few days, Kelce revealed what’s going to happen in the “cool and unique show.”

“I don’t want to give too much away, but the name itself can tell you that it’s a mystery and every scene was so much fun to play,” he said. “I just take it scene by scene and try to make sure I remember my lines. I’m very amateur at it.”

He then explained the “biggest difference” between entering the world of theater from the outside. Travis revealed that he would prioritize memorizing his lines instead of focusing on scenes and taking them “from point to point.”

“I was kind of blown away and kind of shocked that he was willing to give me a role like this, because it’s an important role on the show,” he said of Murphy. “He seemed very confident that I would be able to do that and he kind of injected that into me in the first conversation we had. So I hope I don’t bomb that for him.”

On Tuesday, May 7, a source told PEOPLE that the NFL player was joining Murphy’s latest FX project. Shortly after, Nash-Betts posted another clip of the two hanging out together on set.
