An innocent congratulatory message from Magic Johnson has gone viral for a reason the Los Angeles Lakers star (probably) didn’t anticipate.

Golden State Warriors point guard Steph Curry was named the 2023-24 PBWA Magic Johnson Award winner on Wednesday. Curry beat out fellow finalists Bam Adebayo, DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gobert and Tyrese Haliburton for the award.

Johnson congratulated Curry on Thursday for winning the award for the second time in his career. Johnson’s post on X went viral thanks to the extra line he added about Steph’s mother Sonya.

“Congratulations to Stephen Curry on winning his second PBWA Magic Johnson Award, recognizing a player who demonstrates ‘cooperation and grace in dealing with the media and fans,’ both on and off the court!” Johnson wrote.

“By the way (Stephen Curry), I had fun hanging out with your mom last night at the Sparks home opener!”

Johnson was more than likely sincere and enjoyed his evening of conversation with Curry’s mother. But some fans couldn’t help but focus on Johnson, as if he were teasing Curry about “hanging out” with his mother.

In fairness to Johnson, the Lakers star may not be the one typing the messages he uploads to X.
