BJP asks EC to cancel nominations of two Trinamool candidates

Kolkata, May 15 (SocialNews.XYZ) The West Bengal BJP on Wednesday informed that it has approached the Election Commission (EC) demanding cancellation of nomination of two Trinamool Congress candidates due to serious flaws in the application document.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday afternoon, BJP state general secretary Jagannath Chattopadhyay said the first was Trinamool Congress candidate from Calcutta-Dakshin Mala Roy, who is also the sitting MP of the same constituency.

“Apart from being an MP, she is also the chairperson of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. This function is considered a “profit function”. This time she submitted her candidacy without resigning from this position. Even though she says she does not get any salary as KMC chairperson, she will not be out of reach of this ‘office of profit’, Chattopadhyay said.

The second Trinamool Congress candidate, whose nomination was also sought by the state BJP to be cancelled, is the ruling party’s candidate from Basirhat Lok Sabha in North 24 Parganas district, Haji Nurul Islam, who was a Trinamool Congress MP from the same constituency since 2009 to 2014.

According to Chattopadhyay, anyone applying and having previously held a government, legislative or parliamentary post must produce the government’s ‘no dues certificate’ for the last 10 years along with their application.

“However, Haji Nurul Islam did not submit this ‘no contribution certificate’. If you remember our first candidate for Birbhum Lok Sabha constituency, Debasish Dhar, a former Indian Police officer, had his nomination canceled because he also could not produce this ‘no dues certificate’ “from the state government, following which we had to change our candidate to Birbhum,” Chattopadhyay said.

He said the BJP had already approached the EC to point out these shortcomings in the appointments of Roy and Islam. “We will go to the extreme in this matter, including before the Supreme Court of India,” Chattopadhyay said.

Till the time the report was filed, there was no reaction from Roy, Islam or any other Trinamool Congress leader on the issue.
