MTV Movie and TV Awards canceled for 2024 as ceremony set for major overhaul

The MTV Movie and TV Awards are taking a break this year. The annual event will return in 2025 with a new “reinvented” format.

A source told The Hollywood Reporter that the awards show is expected to return next year after a creative overhaul.

Last year’s event was impacted by Writers Guild of America strikes, leading host Drew Barrymore to withdraw her participation in support of the writers.

Instead of the usual live ceremony, the 2023 edition featured pre-recorded segments, acceptance speeches and highlights from the nominated shows and films, with voiceovers announcing the categories, nominees and winners.

Barrymore expressed solidarity with the striking writers at the time, stating: “I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will stop hosting the MTV Movie and TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike .

“Everything we celebrate and honor in film and television was born from their creation,” as Wales Online reports.

She continued: “And until a solution is found, I choose to wait but I will be watching from home and I hope you will join me. I thank MTV, which has truly been one of the best partners I have ever worked with.
