Blue Marlin weighing over 500 pounds caught in Mount Pleasant

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCBD) – Mount Pleasant fishermen hauled a blue marlin weighing more than 500 pounds into Toler’s Cove Marina Friday afternoon.

The marlin weighed 507.4 pounds and came up on the “Pipe Down” boat. The record blue marlin caught in South Carolina saltwater weighed 881 pounds.

Pipe Down captain Jeff Crabtree described the experience and how the capture took place.

“It was awesome, it’s pretty cool when everything works out the way it’s supposed to. We had seven guys on the boat who had never fished together before, kind of thrown together at the last second…. Crabtree explained. “We were lucky enough to be able to get there first thing in the day, so that was really cool.”

Fisherman Gavin Gonzales said it wasn’t easy to recover the massive catch.

“Yes, it was a challenge; I mean, we fought a little bit and finally made it back to the boat,” Gonzales said. “It took us an hour.”

The Carolina Billfish Classic will soon be held in Mount Pleasant at 20 Patriots Point Road June 19-22.
