Pak: Teacher filmed accepting bribe during exam, suspended

Sanghar (Sindh) (Pakistan), May 19: A teacher in Sanghar district, Sindh province, was suspended after he was caught on camera accepting bribes from students during a 9th grade exam, ARY News reported.

The viral video showed the teacher accepting bribes from students, which led to his suspension. According to reports, each student paid PKR 500 to the teacher in exchange for the latter ensuring that they passed the exam.

The Sindh Education and Literacy Department quickly took notice of the incident and initiated an investigation, the report added.

The incident comes amid a series of poor practices affecting the baccalaureate exams, including widespread paper leaks since the exams began on May 7.

The Sindh Boards and Universities Department has directed the Chairman of the Board of Secondary Education, Karachi to address these malpractices, according to ARY News.

Pakistan’s school education sector has suffered significant setbacks over the past year, leaving millions of children without adequate education and thousands of teaching positions vacant, the report notes.

The persistent problem of teacher shortage in government schools has disrupted academic activities throughout the year, with over 1,20,000 vacancies remaining unfilled due to lack of recruitment initiatives, as reported The Express Tribune.

According to the report, the shortage of teachers in the country’s places of learning, compounded by soaring inflation, has led to a notable increase in dropout rates in public schools.

Additionally, schools have struggled due to insufficient basic infrastructure, including the absence of water filtration plants and playgrounds. These deficiencies have further hampered the quality of education provided to students in the region, The Express Tribune reported.
