Arthur’s boss teases ‘additional content’ after series’ cancellation

Arthur, the beloved children’s television series that has aired since 1996, has been canceled.

The series has regularly been praised for being both educational and entertaining, tackling important issues through beloved characters like Buster and DW.

It’s also spawned a whole host of memes, and its theme song (by Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers) is endlessly iconic – don’t pretend you’re not singing it in your head right now.

Series executive producer Carol Greenwald confirmed the sad news in a statement (via IGN), but said the franchise itself doesn’t necessarily end there.

The release reads: “In the winter of 2022, the 25th and final season of Arthur will debut. Arthur will continue to be available on PBS Kids for years to come.

“Producer GBH and PBS Kids continue to work together on additional Arthur content, sharing the lessons of Arthur and his friends in new ways.”

In 2019, the series revealed that longtime character Mr. Ratburn was gay in an episode where he married another man, well, a ratman.

The series didn’t treat his sexuality as a big deal, with the kids being more surprised that the teachers actually had a social life outside of school.

Arthur has currently aired 24 seasons and around 250 episodes so far, although most recent seasons have consisted of less than 10 episodes each.

Arthur was broadcast on PBS in the United States.
