Shocking moment British tourist stabbed as he tried to stop gang attacking foreigner in Thailand before collapsing

This is the shocking moment a British tourist was stabbed as he tried to break up a fight outside a supermarket in Thailand.

The man was heading to a 7-11 store with his partner when he saw several local men ganging up on a foreigner in Phuket in the early hours of last Friday morning.

He intervened to intervene but was beaten and stabbed by the thugs, who plunged the knife into the left side of his abdomen.

CCTV filmed the alleged attack, with his partner also punched during the brawl on the city’s notorious red light strip, Bangla Road.

The Briton, from Portsmouth, walked into the convenience store bleeding and was rushed to Patong Hospital for treatment.

Lieutenant Colonel Chanan Mekchai of Patong police station said emergency services received a report at 4.40am.

He said: “According to security footage, at 4:32 a.m., a foreigner wearing a white shirt and shorts got into a fight with a group of Thai men on Soi Bangla.

“The altercation escalated and they pushed each other into a small alley, Soi Lao, before fighting at the side of the road, where they were seen by the British man.”

CCTV footage reportedly showed the Briton standing at the entrance to the alley as the Thais and foreigner fell into the street.

He moved towards the group, apparently trying to mediate, but was injured when the rampaging thugs turned their fury on him.

A convenience store worker said the Briton later entered the store and collapsed in front of the counter, bleeding.

He reportedly coughed up blood and was unable to speak.

After removing his t-shirt, they found a small puncture wound, believed to be from a sharp metal object, on his left rib cage.

He was also allegedly hit in the head with a glass bottle.

The man’s shaken partner said: “We had no idea who these men were. We had never met them before. We were just caught up in the incident.”

Police Colonel Chalermchai Hernsawat, superintendent of Patong Police Station, said officers had identified the suspects and were tracking them.

Patong police said in a May 19 report that three of the Thai men – who were not named – had been arrested.

The Sun has contacted the Foreign Office for further information.

The incident is among the latest cases of violence against British tourists and expats in Thailand, sparking concerns about the safety of visitors to the Southeast Asian country.

British mother-of-one Ayesha Jane Cox, 37, was knocked unconscious with a single punch by security guard Mohammad Ayan, 27, whom she reprimanded for taking a nap at work in Bangkok in 2021.

A warrant for the guard’s arrest was issued last September, and Ayesha and her family called on police to arrest him.

She said the attack left her face “permanently damaged”.

On February 22, British tourist Joseph Abadi-Johns, 23, was stabbed during a massive fight in Phuket with Thai transgender sex workers, whom he and his friends allegedly hired but refused to pay.

In August 2023, holidaymaker Ian Thomas, 60, and his son Gregory, 37, were attacked by bouncers who were evicting them from the Matador bar on Pattaya’s Soi Buakhao Red Street.

In 2016, British couple Lewis and Rosemary Owen, 68 and 65, were visiting Hua Hin with their son John, 43, when they were brutally beaten by several drunk Thai men “for spilling their beer”.

The brutal attack left the family unconscious, with Rosemary suffering from brain swelling.

The couple, who regularly visited Thailand, had vowed never to return to Thailand after the attack.

Their attackers were sentenced to four years in prison, commuted to two years after they allegedly confessed.
