LAUREAU, Mont. – The spring sports season wraps up this weekend with state tournaments including State A and B track and field in Laurel. The Red Lodge boys are one of the favorites to potentially win a Class B team title.

The Rams are coming off a Southern B division title this past weekend. It was the program’s first since Red Lodge won back-to-back state championships in 1962 and 1963, according to the school. They did so in record-breaking fashion as the Rams broke five school records at Southern B and ran the state 4x400m relay time of 3:24.8.

“It’s really special, I’m from Wyoming and I didn’t expect much from a B school like Red Lodge, but it’s amazing,” said Gabe Schons, a junior at Red Lodge.

“It’s love, but it’s also like brotherly love. You want to try to compete and be better than the other person and that pushes you to take that extra step, that extra effort if you I think it’s brotherly love and competition, for sure,” Jaiden Robinson said.

Their 4×100 relay team also has the best time in Class B with a time they achieved last weekend in 43 seconds flat. Members of the Rams’ relay teams say the key to their success has been hard work in practice, as they push each other with a certain brotherly love.

“Our workouts, our coach. He puts us through tough workouts and it’s tough, and brotherly love is really super fun, we push each other, which is an amazing thing to do, and we love all of that,” said sophomore Kougar Kappel. .

Added senior Owen Reynolds: “I love pushing each other in practice, that’s really what it is. If someone like Chase goes and runs an 11.3, I have to beat him , you know, and that’s everyone else too And we just lift, so that’s pretty much it.”

It was a good year for several Red Lodge programs. The guys say they knew after their first meeting that they had a chance to do something special this season. This weekend, a special group of Rams will attempt to win a state title for the first time in over fifty years.

“I don’t know, we’re just a special class, I guess. Everyone is so nice, we’re just one big family and so close to each other and it’s super fun,” Kappel said.
