Former Australian cricketer Justin Langer has withdrawn from the race to become the next head coach of the Indian cricket team.

Langer, who coached Lucknow Super Giants, failed to take the franchise to the knockout stages of the season. Under the Australian’s leadership, the team failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs for the first time in its three-year history.

Amid the IPL carnival, the BCCI was looking for a replacement for Rahul Dravid as the Indian head coach as the legendary cricketer’s contract is about to expire.

Justin Langer heeds KL Rahul’s advice and steps down as India coach

LSG and former Australian national team coach Justin Langer was in the race to become the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, however, the Australian has now pulled out of the race.

When asked why he decided not to take the job, Langer said BBC Stumped Podcast (via ESPNCricinfo)

It would be an incredible job, (but) I (put myself out of competition). I also know it’s a global role, and having done it for four years with the Australian team, honestly, it’s exhausting. And that’s the job of the Australians!

When asked if Langer would ever coach the Indian team, the former player replied:

You never say never. And the pressure of doing it in India… I was talking to KL Rahul and he said, “You know, if you think there’s pressure and politics in an IPL team, multiply that by a thousand, (c ‘is) lead India. It was good advice, I suppose. It would be a great job, but not for me right now, Langer said on the podcast.
