UVa’s Sodo finishes 1st at NCAA East meet

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Virginia’s Yasin Sodo won the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday on the third day of the NCAA Eastern Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

He clocked 8 minutes 27.13 seconds, breaking competition and facility records. Teammate Nathan Mountain finished second (8:31.36).

The top 12 finishers in each event during the four-day competition qualify for the NCAA Division I Outdoor National Championships.

Judson Lincoln IV of Virginia Tech took second place in the 400 meters, breaking the ACC record with a time of 44.55 seconds.

UVa’s Jacob Lemmon was second in the discus (195 feet, 3 inches).

UVa’s Shane Cohen was second in the 800 (1:45.36), while Virginia Tech’s Nicholas Plant was eighth (1:46.39).

Virginia Tech’s Chiara Sistermann is tied for sixth in the women’s pole vault (14-1 1/4), with teammate Journey Gurley tied for ninth (13-9 1/4).

Julia Fixsen of Virginia Tech, the 2023 NCAA outdoor pole vault champion, was not present at the competition. She was sidelined with injury all year.

Tech’s Elijah Bell and Brandon Burke tied for seventh in the men’s high jump (7-1 1/2).

UVa’s Gary Martin (3:45.54) and Wes Porter (3:45.73) qualified for the national championships by taking second and third place, respectively, in their 1,500-meter heats.

Nguyen 9th at NCAAs

Roanoke College’s Kaitlyn Nguyen finished ninth in the women’s high jump Friday at the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

She jumped 5 feet 6 inches.

Brady Fowler of Roanoke (Pulaski County) finished 16th in the preliminaries of the men’s 100 meters with a time of 10.61 seconds. Jamaari Blackburn of Ferrum finished 18th (10.65). They did not qualify for Saturday’s eight-a-side final.

Lynx renounces Soule

The WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx waived former Virginia Tech forward Taylor Soule on Friday.

The Lynx activated forward Dorka Juhasz, who joined Minnesota after playing in Italy.

Soule, who helped Tech reach the 2023 Final Four, had played in two regular season games for the Lynx since making the season-opening roster.

She played in 15 games for Chicago last year.

Generals, Maroon cited

Washington and Lee’s Eugenie Rovegno (116 draws, 48 ​​ground balls) was named a first-team Division III All-American Friday by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.

W&L’s Hanna Bishop (58 goals, 40 assists) made the second team.

Roanoke’s Grace Koutouzis (53 goals, 55 assists) and W&L’s Walker McKnight (40 goals, 74 draws) made the third team.

UVa’s Connor Shellenberger (31 goals, 51 assists) won the US Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s Outstanding Attackman award.

He was also named a first-team All-American by the organization, becoming the first Cavalier to be a four-time first-team All-American.

UVa’s Cole Kastner (31 forced turnovers) and Chase Yager (26 forced turnovers) made the second team.

Payton Cormier (64 goals, 12 assists) and Griffin Schutz (23 goals, 12 assists) made the third team.

Generals and Maroons honored

W&L’s Alex Brown (school record 76 goals) and Elliot Cohen (five goals, 12 assists) were named to the Division III All-America second team by the US Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.

Roanoke’s Luke Kammerman (45 goals, 44 assists) made the third team.
