Surrey council to consider million contract for road improvements and truck parking

Surrey, British Columbia – At its regular council meeting next Monday, Surrey council will vote on a $1 million contract to improve the 189A Street collector road and prepare the adjacent city land at 18949 52 Ave for the first truck parking lot. In March, Council approved a plan to address the ongoing shortage of truck parking spaces by upgrading and temporarily leasing four city-owned spaces. At that time, Surrey Council had approved licensing agreements with Prudential Transportation Ltd. for several sites, totaling approximately 150 truck parking spaces.

“I am proud that the City of Surrey is taking a big step forward to address our city’s long-standing truck parking problem,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “As we move forward with Monday’s vote to approve a contract to upgrade and prepare the first site, I am excited to see the positive impact this will have on our community. Providing four designated truck parking spaces will not only improve the safety and convenience of our roads, but will also boost our local economy.

In addition to preparing the first truck parking spot, the contract Council will consider Monday includes road improvements along 189A Street, between 52nd Avenue and the 5300 block. This includes widening the street 189A, as well as improvements to permit on-street truck parking, sidewalks, boulevards and street lighting.

Contract work is expected to begin in June 2024 and be completed by September 2024. Funding for the portion of road work along the 189th Street contract is available in the approved 2024 transportation budget, while funding for Truck parking improvement is available in the City Capital Budget.
