Should the Celtics consider a late tank job after Jaylen Brown’s season-ending injury?

After news of All-Star forward Jaylen Brown’s wrist injury, should the Boston Celtics consider a mini-tank job to boost their draft stock? While this may rub players and their fans the wrong way, there are compelling arguments in favor of such a move.

The Celtics are a team in great shape, having led the league in COVID-related absences during the 2020-21 season with a fair share of games lost to non-COVID-related injuries as well. Kemba Walker has done a great job managing his knee, but wouldn’t it be better to put him through the kind of stress that the playoffs demand when he has a chance to run deeper than we’ve seen this team ? Robert Williams III’s turf toe may not be a long-term problem, but it will need some time to get better.

Add in that the team has had some valuable minutes for its younger players and could really use the burn to see who to keep and who to move as they inevitably consolidate and move on from players once the offseason begins in earnest.

Add a chance at a lottery pick if the youth movement doesn’t have enough to drag the Celtics across the finish line in two straight play-in games to boost the offseason warchest or snag a support player cheap with some maintenance from the main players. healthy for next season, and the matter is not so easily dismissed.

Ultimately, this will be a decision for the front office and players to make – but it could be argued that sometimes the best step forward is a temporary step back.
