Charlie Patino sent message from Mick McCarthy after Arsenal loanee saw red for Blackpool

Charlie Patino has been backed by Blackpool boss Mick McCarthy despite his sending off.

The Arsenal loanee has been a regular for Blackpool this season in the Championship, raising hopes he could soon be ready for first-team involvement in north London.

However, Patino saw red on Wednesday night as Blackpool were beaten by Swansea, leaving the club bottom of the table on goal difference.

The 19-year-old picked up a yellow card in the first half, before a foul 12 minutes after the break earned him another as Blackpool fell to ten men. McCarthy, however, chose not to criticize Patino after the match.

“I’m not going to be too hard on Charlie,” McCarthy said.

“He’s a young kid and he was just a little reckless, but he was trying to win the ball.”

In McCarthy’s first game in charge of Blackpool last month, the Championship side faced Southampton in the FA Cup.

Asked after the match for his first opinion on Patino, who scored in the 2-1 defeat, the veteran coach praised the midfielder’s attitude.

“He’s right, Charlie,” McCarthy told The Athletic.

“He’s a young man and sometimes he doesn’t always get his way. He could press and get passed, but in the first half he lost the ball in front of us about 20 yards into their half and recovered it in the 18 yard box on the other side of the ground.

“I said, ‘If you can do this, you’ll do it for me.’
