‘Stop recruiting players from local T20 leagues’: Sunil Gavaskar slams franchises for playing undeserving cricketers in IPL

Former Indian player Sunil Gavaskar has slammed franchises for signing and playing unworthy cricketers in the Indian Premier League. He commentated after the IPL 2024 final between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai. The title was won by the Shreyas Iyer-led franchise.

The Sunrisers’ batting unit couldn’t get going and several young Indian batters played careless shots, leading to their downfall. SRH were bowled out for 113 and KKR finished the chase in 10.3 overs.

Speaking after the contest, Gavaskar launched a scathing attack on the teams.

“Teams are making big mistakes by signing players who don’t deserve to play in the Indian Premier League. Unworthy cricketers not only impact the standards but also fail to contribute.

“The franchises will have to realize and understand that these players cannot participate in the tournament. They get paid hefty sums and when they come to IPL, the performance levels drop drastically. They can play in local T20 leagues but not in IPL.

“There is no need to recruit players from Rajasthan League, Gujarat League, UP League and other competitions,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
