The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) will today picket the South African steelworks at Meyerton in the Vaal.

This after more than 160 workers were allegedly unfairly dismissed for participating in a protected strike.

Workers embarked on an indefinite strike in April after the company refused to recognize their representatives as full-time union delegates.

Numsa regional secretary Kabelo Ramokhatali says: “There are various issues such as the minimum wage as defined by the MIDC as well as occupational health and safety issues among others. But the main problem is that the company, after employees embarked on a protected strike, fired more than 162 workers.”
