DeWine announces extended sales tax holiday

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Gov. Mike DeWine announced Friday that the expanded sales tax holiday for 2024 will run from midnight July 30 to 11:59 p.m. Aug. 8.

Working with the Ohio General Assembly, the governor extended the duration of the state’s sales tax holiday to 10 days and will allow tax-free purchases made in person or online on all items eligible up to $500.

“Historically, the Ohio sales tax holiday is intended to help families purchase clothing and school supplies for the upcoming school year,” DeWine said. “This expanded sales tax relief will help Ohio families meet back-to-school necessities as well as other major purchases at a time when so many household budgets are under strain.”

Previous sales tax holidays lasted three days, included only school-related items, and offered much lower purchase price limits ($75 maximum for clothing; $20 per item of educational materials and/or school supplies).

Duty-free purchases do not include services or any purchases of personal watercraft, outboard motors, motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, vaping products or any item containing marijuana.
